Nicky Lawrence is a Toronto-based multi hyphenate. A forward thinking innovator, singer, songwriter, actor, playwright and director, she helms her own production company Incongruent Media Inc. as its  Creative Director. With her vast experience in entertainment, Nicky builds quality productions, garnering sold out houses and praise from both the industry and community. From the inception and writing of Key Change to the recent critical acclaim of her latest production Spaciousness, the arc of her creative vision has elated and connected audiences from coast to coast who continue to support each new production! Having toured the country with Canada’s celebrated legacy artist Amanda Marshall as her long time backing vocalist, she has also been featured in several special performances; Women’s Blues Review (Roy Thompson Hall), Canada’s Walk of Fame CTV (Salome Bey star tribute) the University of Toronto’s Black History Month programming (Hart House) Toronto History Museums (Spadina House, Mary Pipkins) Nicky’s acting career has included roles in TV (Schitt’s Creek, Anne with an E, and Workin’ Moms), and theatre (The Shaw Festival, Neptune Theatre, YPT, Rainbow Stage and Drayton) In 2017, Nicky was commissioned by Regina’s Globe Theatre to write and produce Key Change – a resounding artistic and commercial success. It was the precursor to her current multimedia theatre-concert project and record Ugly Black Woman which elevates and amplifies the Black female voice through historical and modern-day stories of Black Canadian women told via music, storytelling, and interviews. The critically-acclaimed show was recently performed to a sold out audience at the Paradise Theatre in Toronto. A vibrant creator and thinker, Nicky recently made her directorial debut on screen with the film release of My Name Is Jackie, an endearing tribute to Toronto R&B pioneer Jackie Shane! Uniquely positioned as a new perspective in the field of theatre, film, television and media, Nicky’s joy of telling stories while connecting people continues to inspire.
